Open Vermont

A community platform for Vermonters to surface challenges, share resources, and build solutions together through open source technology.

Collaboration and transparency are key to creating sustainable solutions — by sharing knowledge, reducing waste, and innovating together for the benefit of all Vermonters.

Open Vermont organizes and empowers people to collectively tackle challenges — from large-scale systemic issues to very local concerns. Our approach emphasizes building open source technology — software, hardware, and data — and fostering a culture of reuse through initiatives like the Right to Repair movement.

Community members can submit opportunities they believe could be improved — infrastructure, education, technology, or everyday challenges. Others can join in, contribute resources, and help prioritize them — turning good ideas into actionable projects.

Each opportunity identifies a community challenge alongside the existing resources — organizations, tools, and funding — already available to address it.

How voting works: Each opportunity includes an option to upvote. The more interest an idea receives, the higher it appears in the list — helping the community identify where collaborative effort could have the most impact.

Community Standards

Code of Conduct

Open Vermont is committed to providing a welcoming, respectful, and productive environment for everyone — regardless of background, experience level, or perspective.

Be respectful

Treat all community members with courtesy. Disagreement is welcome; personal attacks, harassment, and discriminatory language are not.

Focus on the work

Keep contributions centered on identifying challenges and building solutions. Avoid partisan political framing — we are here to make things better, not to score points.

Act in good faith

Assume positive intent. When something is unclear, ask before assuming the worst. Share knowledge openly and give credit generously.

Protect the community

Do not share private information about others without consent. Do not use this platform to promote commercial interests or spread misinformation.

Embrace diverse perspectives

Vermont is varied — urban and rural, farmers and technologists, longtime residents and newcomers. Every perspective has value. Listen as much as you speak.

Report concerns

If you witness behavior that violates these standards, please contact us. Reports are handled with discretion and taken seriously.
